The Corvair uses a generator instead of an alternator. The one my Corvair is shot, so I decided to try to rebuild it. The basic rebuild involves replaces the brushes (and in my case the springs that keep the brush against the commutator), some nuts and bolts, a new washer, bearings, bushing, and a small key. Not too hard, except getting the nut on the end off...lots of rust holding it on. |

The generator in its natural state. |
This end of the generator where the brass(?) bushing lives. Getting the old one out was interesting. I don't think I'd replace it if I had to do it over again. |
New brushes with new springs. |
