The Corvair is a 1963 700 model. My mom bought it new back then. My dad took it back to the Chevy dealership because it leaked oil. The mechanic had some sort of fix for it, and it hasn't really leaked since then. After my parents parked it the first time, my brother took it over and drove it. He had interesting experiences like it only going in reverse and the steering wheel coming off. I took it over in the late 80s and drove it. This is when "floorboards" were put in. Unfortunately, during that process of installing the new carpet, a screw went into the gas tank. The carpet eventually was soaked with gas and all of it was ripped out. So it's carpetless now. It's sat at my parent's farm for the last who knows how long. I decided recently that I needed some sort of project and intend to make it into a driver. No full restoration, but get it into working order and have fun driving around. Click on the small images to see the large images. |

Norma II. 1963 Corvair 700. One family owned car. |
Passenger side front wheel well |
Passenger side rocker rust |
Passenger side door |
Passenger side vent open. Inside the vent looks pretty good. |
Under dash rust, although the area that connects to the "trunk" seems very solid and mostly free of rust. |
Driver's side rust. |
|
Driver side rocker heat vent. The wires to control it are rusted. Past the rusty gate looks like good metal. Passenger side is about the same. |
Driver's side vent open. Metal inside seemed good. Had to extract a baseball sized dirt dobber nest. |
A closer look inside the vent. |
|
Driver's side fender rust. I think most of this isn't too bad, but I'll have to remove the trim first to really get a good look. |
The "trunk" complete with one rust master cylinder. Inside looks fine, but the outside is ugly. |
One box of things in the trunk. |
|
Open "hood". |
Closer view of the engine bay. No battery and the generator has been removed. I also took the spare out. |
Battery tray with some wear and tear. There's an insert that goes in there to protect from the usual Corvair issues in this area. |
|
One of the twin carbs with a dirt dobber nest. Those things were all over this car. |
Passenger side front was "caught" by a tractor. Just tore the trim off the lights. These pieces are not inexpensive. I guess this is one more thing I'll try to learn how to fix. |
Busted tail light. |
|
A few pictures of the original shape of the Corvair. |
